2 Timothy
Day
Day 6

"I remind you to stir up the gift of God..."

Text: 2 Timothy 1:6

THE GIFTS OF GOD

When God planned our redemption, He added spiritual gifts. One of the clearest passages is the following text:-

“But to each one of us grace was given according to
the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore He says:
‘When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive,
and gave gifts to men.’ ”
Ephesians 4:7-8

1. “Grace”

This is a key word to remember. All gifts stem from the grace of God.

2. Christ’s gift

This is another key word to note. All gifts come through the Lord Jesus Christ.
a) He has triumphed over all.
i) Sin
ii) Satan
b) He is in the position to grant gifts.
i) To all who are His.
ii) To all who are called to serve Him.

OUR RESPONSE

We have a responsibility to fulfil. God has done His part in the provision of gifts. Paul taught Timothy how he must fulfil his part.

“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is
in you through the laying on of my hands.”
2 Timothy 1:6

1. “Therefore I remind you”

Paul sought to issue a reminder to Timothy. The latter was well aware of what he needed to do!

2. “Stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands”

a) “To stir up the gift of God which is in you”
i) The phrase “to stir up” is associated with the word “fire”.
ii) Timothy was urged to fan and stoke the gift that was in him till his gift was “on fire”.
b) “Through the laying on of my hands”
i) This is probably a reference to the ordination of Timothy.
ii) The laying on of hands was commonly practised.
iii) There is great symbolic significance. A special gift had been imparted to Timothy.
