"The genuine faith that is in you..."

Text: 2 Timothy 1:5

THE BOND OF GENUINE FAITH

The bond between the Apostle Paul and Timothy was undoubtedly strong. The following text gives us a further glimpse of what made this bond so strong. Sharing of a genuine faith plays a key role in bonding!

“When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you,
which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice,
and I am persuaded is in you also.”
2 Timothy 1:5

1. “When I call to remembrance”

a) There must have been a significant amount of memory.
b) Paul drew on his memory of past events with Timothy and his family.

2. “The genuine faith”

a) The word “genuine” literally means “unhypocritical”.
b) The Lord Jesus used to rebuke the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy (Matthew 23).
i) Outwardly there was a show of faith.
ii) But in reality genuine faith was not there.
c) Expressions of genuine faith:-
i) This is best evidenced in works (James 2).
ii) This is evidenced in fruitfulness (Matthew 7:15-20).

3. Three generations of genuine faith

a) Genuine faith will indwell a person.
b) Faith will make a home in the life of the individual.
c) It is there to stay!
d) Three generations noted:-
i) Grandmother Lois
ii) Mother Eunice
iii) Timothy

4. “And I am persuaded is in you also”

a) The word “persuaded” was written in the Perfect Tense.
b) Paul must have taken time to check out Timothy’s faith over a period of time.
c) Timothy had fully proven that he possessed genuine faith.
