"Given us everlasting consolation..."

Text: 2 Thessalonians 2:16

A SPONTANEOUS HEARTFELT WISH

The following text reflects a spontaneous wish that the apostle Paul expressed as he wrote to the Thessalonians.

“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our
God and Father, who has loved us and given us
everlasting consolation and good hope by grace,
comfort your hearts and establish you in every good
word and work.”

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

1. A wish expressed only

a) It is like a prayer.
b) It expresses faith .
c) It also lifts up hope.

2. A wish involving

a) The Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
b) God the Father.
c) Both are specifically mentioned.

3. Our salvation from the Lord

a) We have been dearly loved.
b) We have been given everlasting consolation.
c) We have also been given good hope.
d) All the above stem from the grace of God.

4. The goals of this expressed wish

a) God will give the necessary comfort.
i) So that we will not be troubled by trials and tribulations.
ii) So that we will not be in despair if life is difficult.
b) God will establish
i) Salvation’s work had begun.
ii) It needs to be established.
c) For every good word and work

The ultimate goal is not selfish enjoyment of God’s blessings. We were meant to speak good words and do good works.
