"Where is the promise of His coming?"

Text: 2 Peter 3:4

A COMMON TACTIC

Peter was familiar with the tactics employed by the scoffers. They would raise questions that were intended to undermine the faith of the believers.

“And saying, “Where is the promise of His coming?
For since the fathers fell asleep,
all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.”
2 Peter 3:4

1. “And saying”

a) They will engage believers in conversation.

b) They will then raise questions that may cause doubts to arise.

c) Weaker believers are most vulnerable.

2. “Where is the promise of His coming?”

a) It was the Lord Jesus who said that He would be coming again
(John 14:3; Matthew 24:36-42).

b) These scoffers were challenging the promise given by the Lord Jesus Himself.

c) They demanded answers to their question.

d) They sought to undermine the faith of believers by casting doubts.

3. “For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation”

a) Their line of thought must be understood.

b) They were using human measurement of time.

4. They made the following observations

a) “Since the fathers fell asleep”

i) They were saying that many have already died.

ii) But the Lord had not come as He had promised.

iii) Since Jesus had not come, then His promise cannot be trusted.

b) “All things continue as they were from the beginning of creation”

i) They observe that life seems very normal.

ii) From the time of creation things have remained the same, is of doubtful meaning and significance.
