"Scoffers will come in the last days"

Text: 2 Peter 3:3

THE LAST DAYS

The word “eschatology” is a study of “the end times”. The word comes from the Greek word “eschatos”, which means “the last”. No single book fully describes “the last days” completely. Each Biblical writer addressed problems that surfaced. And each one faced different sets of questions.

“Knowing this first:
that scoffers will come in the last days,
walking according to their own lusts.”
2 Peter 3:3

1. “Knowing this first”

a) The believers Peter was addressing already had some knowledge about eschatology.

b) Peter sought to remind them that they must bear in mind the first lessons taught about the last days.

c) This knowledge must be borne in mind first and foremost.

d) It is important to have clear knowledge about “the last days”.

2. “That scoffers will come in the last days”

a) Scoffers

i) They will mock this doctrine about the last days.

ii) The scoffers have mocked faith in the Lord Jesus in the first place.

iii) The verse may be translated this way “Mockers will come mocking”.

iv) The emphasis is on the word “mocking”.

b) They will come up in the last days.

i) Their very appearance must not come as a surprise.

ii) The teaching of eschatology includes this word of warning about people
who will scoff at this Biblical teaching.

3. “Walking according to their own lusts”

a) The mockers would be led by their “lusts”.

b) They are not people whose lives are characterised by righteousness.

c) Their “lusts” could be:

i) Fame

ii) Money

iii) Sensuality
