"In truth and love."

Text: 2 John 3

OTHER THINGS WHICH ARE RELATED

The Apostle John went on to link other things to truth and love. The following text helps us to appreciate how things are closely related.

“Grace, mercy and peace will be with you
from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ,
the Son of the Father, in truth and love.”
2 John 3

1. The usual way of greetings

This was typical of greetings sent out by the apostles: –

a) Grace and peace were the usual combination.
b) The Apostle Peter sent out greetings in his letters (1 Peter 1:2; 2 Peter 1:2).
c) The Apostle Paul wrote in a similar manner (Philippians 1:2; Colossians 1:2).

2. A modified way of greeting:-

John added the word “mercy”.

a) Grace
b) Mercy
c) Peace

3. Greetings and blessing

a) To send greeting was also to wish a blessing from the Lord.
b) This was an intended idea.
c) John wished these blessings would be with his readers forever!

4. The Source of blessings

a) From God the Father.
b) Also from the Lord Jesus Christ.
c) This was consistently practised by the apostles (Philippians 1:2; Colossians 1:2).

5. “In truth and love”

The Apostle John added this thought to the greetings he sent out to the elect lady and her children.

a) By doing this John sought to show how these concepts are greatly linked together.
b) The blessings of God are not merely polite words used in normal greetings.
c) These blessings come from “truth and love” which in turn come from the Father and the Son.
d) The emphasis on “truth and love” must not be missed out!
e) The teachings of the Lord Jesus on “truth and love” must be given due consideration.
