"There is liberty."

Text: 2 Corinthians 3:17

A PROFOUND TRIUNE GOD AT WORK

The doctrine of a Triune Godhead is so profound, no one has even been able to fully explain it. Nevertheless, it is true that the Scriptures teach a Triune Godhead.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the
Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
2 Corinthians 3:17

1. References to the Triune Godhead

a) God the Father is mentioned in 2 Corinthians 1:3.
i) He is described as the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
ii) Jesus is mentioned and called the “Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 1:3).
iii) The Spirit of God is called “Lord” as well (2 Corinthians 3:17).
b) The Triune Godhead is fully involved.
i) God the Father comforts.
ii) He does all things in and through the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 2:14).
iii) The Spirit of God is One who gives life (2 Corinthians 3:6).
iv) There is absolute harmony.

2. “Now the Lord is the Spirit”

a) The Holy Spirit is Lord too.
b) This is a truth that must be recognised.
c) He is not a lesser Person in the Triune Godhead!

3. “And where the Spirit of the Lord is”

a) He is there in the work of regeneration (Titus 3:5).
b) He is there in the work of comforting too (John 14:15-17).
c) He is there to guide and to teach (John 14:26).

4. “There is liberty”

a) Liberty from the power of sin.
b) Liberty from legalism.
c) Liberty from slavery to human traditions.
d) Liberty from being held captive by wrong teachings.
e) Liberty that is found in the teachings of Christ.
f) Liberty to read the Scriptures effectively; so that Christ Jesus can be seen in the reading of the Old Testament!
