"The witness of God is greater..."

Text: 1 John 5:9

THE WITNESS OF MEN

The Old Testament provided guidelines for acceptance of evidence when two or three witnesses are produced (Deuteronomy 17:6). Of course these witnesses must be proven to be faithful and reliable. This method of establishing truth became the norm.

THE WITNESS OF GOD

The Apostle John wrote to encourage his readers to consider an even more profound way of being assured of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

“If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God
is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has
testified of His Son.”
1 John 5:9

1. “If we receive the witness of men”

a) There were many witnesses from men.
b) The following may be highlighted:-
i) The witness of John the Baptiser (John 1:34)
ii) The witness of the apostles of Christ (Acts 2:32)
c) Many had received the witnesses of men and had come to faith in Christ (Acts 2:41).

2. “The witness of God is greater”

a) God testified that Jesus was indeed His beloved Son.
i) At His baptism (Matthew 3:17).
ii) His transfiguration witnessed by Peter, James and John (Matthew 17:1-6).
b) God testified about Jesus (Act 2:22).
i) By miracles
ii) Wonders
iii) Signs

3. “This is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son.”

The Apostle John sought to emphasise the significance of God’s witness concerning the Lord Jesus!

a) The significance of God as a witness must not be lost.
i) There was verbal declaration.
ii) The works of Jesus bore testimony of God’s power at work (John 3:2).
b) God’s testimony concerning Jesus.
i) Jesus was His beloved Son.
ii) All are meant to honour Him and listen to Him.
