"He was manifested to take away our sins..."

Text: 1 John 3:5

THE SOLUTION TO THE SIN PROBLEM

It can be quite depressing to learn about the serious nature of sin. The Apostle John swiftly wrote to encourage his readers with this glorious solution.

“And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins,
and in Him there is no sin.”
1 John 3:5

1. “And you know”

a) John wrote using the Greek Perfect Tense.
b) It may be translated with these nuances in mind:-
i) This was knowledge that had been previously communicated.
ii) This knowledge stands them in good stead.
iii) This is wonderful current knowledge.

2. “That He was manifested to take away our sins”

a) The word “manifested”:-
i) Revealed
ii) Clearly made known
b) The One manifested was the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
i) John the Baptiser came to manifest Jesus.
ii) He revealed Him and proclaimed Him as “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
c) The Apostle John
i) He was one of the disciples of John the Baptiser.
ii) He discovered for himself that Jesus was indeed manifested to take away our sins.

3. “And in Him there is no sin”

a) Jesus was the Word made flesh.
b) He came to deal with the problem of sin.
c) He was tempted in all points as we are but He was spotless for He did not succumb to sin.

4. In and through the Lord Jesus Christ

a) There is forgiveness of sin.
b) There is total cleansing from sin.
