"The last enemy..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 15:26

THE ENEMIES OF THE LORD

There were many enemies that confronted the Lord Jesus when He came to earth. There were human enemies who plotted and planned His death. There were powerful spiritual enemies who challenged Him by possessing people. But the Lord Jesus Christ triumphed over all His enemies.

ONE LAST ENEMY

Paul wrote about one last enemy that must be destroyed. What a glorious triumph that would be when the last enemy is defeated.

“The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.
For ‘He has put all things under His feet.’
But when He says ‘all things are put under Him,’
it is evident that He who has put all things under Him is excepted.”
1 Corinthians 15:26-27

1. “The last enemy that will be destroyed is death”

a) Why is death so difficult to destroy?
b) The following things must be borne in mind:
i) Death is the punishment for sin.
ii) As long as sin exists, there will always be death.
iii) Sin and Satan are never far apart.
iv) The prince of the power of the air will always influence people to sin (Ephesians 2:1-3).

c) Death will be destroyed finally
i) After Satan and his hordes have been judged and condemned (Revelation 20:7-10).
ii) After all those who are sinful are judged and sentenced (Revelation 20:11-15).
iii) Then will death, the last enemy be destroyed forever.

2. An important explanation

a) “He has put all things under His feet.”
This is a reference to God putting all things under the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) There is one exception
Paul felt that this thought must be carefully explained.
i) Christ Jesus is the exception.
iii) He was there in the beginning with God (John 1:1).
iv) He is the Anointed King (Psalm 2:6-7).
iv) He has always been in the bosom of the Father (John 1:18).
v) He is at present our Mediator and our great High Priest (1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 4-8).
vi) He will return one day to establish the Millennial Kingdom (Revelation 20:4-6).
