"In an unworthy manner..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 11:27

THE MANNER OF PARTAKING THE LORD’S SUPPER

How one partakes of the Lord’s Supper is also important. This was well taught by the Apostle Paul.

“Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord
in an unworthy manner will be guilty of
the body and blood of the Lord.
But let a man examine himself,
and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner
eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.”
1 Corinthians 11:27-30

1. “In an unworthy manner”

a) This is a serious matter.
b) What is “an unworthy manner?”
i) Where there is no regard for the Lord.
ii) Where there is drunkenness.
iii) Where there is no discernment of what the Lord’s Supper means.
c) The guilt
i) Sin has been committed.
ii) Penalty may be exacted.
iii) Punishment from the Lord may be meted out.

2. “Let a man examine himself”

a) This involves preparation of the heart and mind before partaking of the Lord’s Supper.
b) This further involves consciousness when partaking of the Lord’s Supper.
c) The solemnity of remembering the Lord’s Death must be noted.

3. “Judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body”

a) Judgment may be in the future.
b) Judgment may also be in the present.
c) In the context of the Corinthian church, there were some sobering observations: –
i) Some became weak and sickly.
ii) Some were even slain.
