MANY MIGHTY FOES

Egypt was truly a mighty foe to the children of Israel. But God released His people from their Egyptian bondage. In the bid to conquer the land of Canaan, many other adversaries arose. But they were all defeated by Joshua (Joshua 12).

BABYLON – AN EVEN MIGHTIER FOE

Babylon was an even mightier enemy than Egypt. Here is a quick historical survey of Babylon with reference to the nation of Israel.

1. Prophecies against Babylon

a) Isaiah prophesied the fall of Babylon (Isaiah 13-14).
b) Jeremiah also proclaimed the destruction of Babylon (Jeremiah 50-51).

2. Some sins of Babylon highlighted

a) Oppression Isaiah 14:4b
b) Wickedness Isaiah 14:5
c) Wrathful Isaiah 14:6
d) Destructive Jeremiah 50:11; 51:25
e) Haughtiness Jeremiah 50:31-32

THE DESTRUCTION OF BABYLON WAS MEANT TO BE REMEMBERED

The sons of Korah were correct to write about how God defeated Babylon. Let us ponder the following text written by Jeremiah.

“As Babylon has caused the slain of Israel to fall,
So at Babylon the slain of all the earth shall fall.

You who have escaped the sword,
Get away! Do not stand still!
Remember the LORD afar off,
And let Jerusalem come to your mind.”
Jeremiah 51:49-50

1. Israel was to remember that God defeated Babylon.

2. The mighty empire of Nebuchadnezzar would become no more than a heap (Jeremiah 51:37).

3. Israel must take fresh heart and rejoice in the Lord their Redeemer.
