Day 60 – Psalm 76

“In Salem also is His tabernacle…” Psalm 76:2a

JERUSALEM UNDER ATTACK

Psalm 74 describes a wicked attack on Jerusalem. Many were the destructive acts of the enemy. They even attacked the Temple of Jerusalem.

JERUSALEM WAS STILL GOD’S DWELLING PLACE

Psalm 75 contained the answers to Asaph’s questions and petitions. Psalm 76 was written out of a renewed faith in God.

“In Salem also is His tabernacle,
And His dwelling place in Zion.”
Psalm 76:2

1. “In Salem also is His tabernacle”

a) Salem is short form for Jerusalem.
b) It was at Jerusalem that God said He would bless the Temple (tabernacle).

2. “And His dwelling place in Zion”

a) Zion was another name for Jerusalem.
b) Zion would be God’s chosen dwelling place.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF GOD’S CHOICE OF JERUSALEM

A brief history of God’s choice of Jerusalem as His dwelling place would help us understand and appreciate these psalms of Asaph a little better.

1. David took great pains to plan the building of the temple (1 Chronicles 28-29).

2. Solomon was entrusted with the task of actually building the temple (1 Chronicles 29).

3. Solomon built the temple according to his father’s wishes (2 Chronicles 1-5).

4. The Temple was then dedicated by Solomon (2 Chronicles 6).

5. God accepted the temple at Jerusalem and made the following promises (2 Chronicles 7):-

a) He had chosen Jerusalem for Himself as a house of sacrifice (2 Chronicles 7:12).
b) He had sanctified the temple and placed His name there (2 Chronicles 7:16).
c) God’s eyes and heart will be there perpetually (2 Chronicles 7:17).
d) God promised that He would hear the prayers of His people if they sincerely seek His face and repent from their wicked ways (2 Chronicles 7:14).
