"Having the key to the bottomless pit"

Text: Revelation 20:1

ANOTHER ANGEL FROM HEAVEN

An angel came down from heaven. He was sent to execute a task that would have required great spiritual authority.

“Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven,
having the key to the bottomless pit
and a great chain in his hand.
He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old,
who is the Devil and Satan,
and bound him for a thousand years;
and he cast him into the bottomless pit,
and shut him up, and set a seal on him,
so that he should deceive the nations no more
till the thousand years were finished.
But after these things he must be released for a little while.”
Revelation 20:1-3

1. Two things were given to this unnamed angel.

a) He had the key to the bottomless pit.

b) He also had a great chain in his hand.

c) What the key looks like is not known.

d) What kind of chain is also not disclosed.

2. An angel could bind the Devil.

a) The identity of Satan.

i) He is called the dragon.

ii) The serpent of old.

iii) The Devil.

b) The Devil is NOT the equal of God.

c) Neither is he the equal of the Lord Jesus.

d) An unknown angel was able to bind Satan.

e) God does not even have to deal with Satan personally.

3. The Divine Sentence.

a) The sentence given to Satan was 1000 years of imprisonment.

b) He would be in chains.

4. The bottomless pit.

a) Satan would be shut away in the bottomless pit.

b) A seal was given to forbid Satan from his usual evil activities.

c) He would be held in the bottomless pit for a millennium.

d) After he had completed his sentence, he would be released.
