"The kings of the earth"

Text: Revelation 18:9

THE LAMENT OF KINGS

The fall of Babylon was greeted by her lovers with grief and sorrow. Kings of the earth who were closely allied to Babylon grieved at its fall.

“The kings of the earth who committed fornication
and lived luxuriously with her will weep and lament for her,
when they see the smoke of her burning,
standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying,
‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city!
For in one hour your judgment has come.'”
Revelation 18:9-10

1. The kings of the earth.

a) This is a reference to the rulers of different nations.

b) The word “kings” may be applied to “presidents” or “prime ministers” in today’s context.

c) They were guilty of committing fornication with Babylon.

d) They were also guilty of living luxuriously in Babylon.

e) Babylon’s influence was obvious:

i) There was immorality.

ii) There was living in selfish luxury.

2. The lament of the kings.

a) They will weep.

b) They will shed tears with lamentation when they see Babylon going up in smoke.

3. They will lament from afar.

a) They feared that they would suffer the same fate.

b) They feared for themselves as much as they grieved for Babylon.

c) Their sorrow for Babylon was because of the strong ties formed over the years.

4. The words of their lament.

a) “Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city!”

b) “For in one hour your judgment has come.”

5. What the kings mourned over.

a) That Babylon would no longer be “great” or “mighty”.

b) That in just an hour, Babylon’s judgment came.

c) Their sorrow was that the city of Babylon as they knew it would now cease forever.
