LOVE FOR GOD’S WORD

Text: Psalm 119
24 May 2026

A DEEP AFFECTION FOR THE SCRIPTURES

All of us have different reasons why we love the Scriptures. The Psalmist shares why he loved the Lord’s word.

97 Oh, how I love Your law!

It is my meditation all the day.

98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies;

For they are ever with me.

99 I have more understanding than all my teachers,

For Your testimonies are my meditation.

100 I understand more than the ancients,

Because I keep Your precepts.     Psalm 119:97-100

  1. A declaration of love for God’s word

a) This was boldly declared

b) The context of undergoing affliction is to be borne in mind

c) Through afflictions caused by enemies, the Psalmist gained a deeper love for the law of God

  1. Three reasons highlighted:

a) More wisdom gained

i)   More wisdom than possessed by enemies

ii)  Enemies used their wits to persecute the Psalmist

iii) But the Psalmist was never outwitted by his enemies because of the wisdom gained from the Word of God

b) More understanding than his teachers

i)   He was grateful for his teachers

ii)  But the Word of God gave him more understanding than his teachers

c) More understanding than the ancient wise men

i)   This is certainly possible

ii)  The wisdom that God gives in His word is far superior to man’s wisdom
