"And they sang a new song"

Text: Revelation 5:9

A NEW SONG COMPOSED

When John was fearful that the scroll in God’s hand would never be opened, he wept with great sorrow. But when the Lamb of God prevailed, a special surge of joy was felt. This was a deeply emotional moment not only for John but also the dwellers in the heavenly domain. A new song was composed and sung by the cherubim and the twenty-four elders!

“Now when He had taken the scroll,
the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders
fell down before the Lamb,
each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense,
which are the prayers of the saints.
And they sang a new song, saying:
‘You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.'”
Revelation 5:8-10

1. “The Lamb of God”

a) He calmly approached the throne of God.

b) He then took the sacred scroll from the Divine Hand.

c) He was the Lamb of God who had taken away the sin of the world.

d) He had every right to take the scroll from the hand of His Father.

2. The new song of the cherubim and the twenty-four elders.

a) Obviously, a new song had to be composed.

b) When one is greatly inspired, a new song will be composed easily.

c) Subsequently, the new song was then sung by this heavenly assembly.

d) All were moved when the Lamb of God was the only One found worthy to take the scroll and open it!

e) Without the Lamb of God, the scroll would have to remain closed forever.

3. The words of the new song.

a) The focus was the worthiness of the Lamb of God.

b) Only He was found totally worthy to open the seals.

c) Two reasons were highlighted:

i) The intrinsic worth of the Lamb of God.

ii) He has redeemed us to God by His own blood.

d) The recipients of His sacrificial death on the cross:

i) Every tribe.

ii) Every nation.

iii) Every community of people.

iv) Every nation.

4. Glorious consequences.

a) All the children of God.

i) They become “kings”.

ii) They become “priests”.

b) All would “reign” with the Lord.

i) The idea of the word “reign” is that of “shepherding”.

ii) We will be helping the Lord Jesus to govern the Millennial kingdom.

iii) We will be His under-shepherds.

iv) In this manner “we reign” with the Lord.
