Revelation
"Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess"
Text: Revelation 2:20
THE FALSE PROPHETESS, JEZEBEL
The Lord Jesus had to address a problem that should have been dealt with firmly right from the start. But the Church at Thyatira did nothing and the problem got out of hand. A stern word of warning was issued to the Church.
“Nevertheless I have a few things against you,
because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess,
to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality
and eat things sacrificed to idols.
And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.
Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed,
and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation,
unless they repent of their deeds.
I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know
that I am He who searches the minds and hearts.
And I will give to each one of you according to your works.”
Revelation 2:20-23
1. Self-promotion
a) She called herself “a prophetess”.
b) This claim should have been checked.
c) But she was allowed to get away with her claim to being a prophetess of God.
2. Left unchecked.
a) She had grave influence over the church.
b) She taught the servants of God.
i) To do immoral things.
ii) To compromise with idolaters and to have fellowship with them.
3. Time and chance given to repent.
a) The Lord gave Jezebel time to repent.
b) The opportunity to repent was rejected.
c) Jezebel chose to reject God’s call to repentance.
d) She continued in her wicked ways and she began to have a following who practised wickedness too.
4. A severe word of warning was then issued.
a) Jezebel would be punished with illness/ disease.
b) Her immoral followers would suffer tribulation.
c) Unless they repented of their evil ways.
d) Her children (literal and/or metaphorical) would perish!
5. A sobering lesson for all the churches to learn.
a) God will reward according to the works that are done.
i) If the people would be faithful and true, there was nothing to fear
ii) If the people were to follow Jezebel’s ways, they must expect judgment.
b) The Lord Jesus is One who searches the minds and the hearts.
i) The Lord would assess each and every church impartially.
ii) Reward or Rebuke would depend on activities of the Church.
