Day 19

"Do not fear any of those things"

Text: Revelation 2:10

DO NOT FEAR

The Church at Smyrna was encouraged not to yield to the fear of persecution. The trials and tribulation they were experiencing were commonplace to many true believers. The devil who was causing this tribulation would try and cause the heart to become fearful. The challenge is to know how they can find faith to overcome fear!

“Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer.
Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison,
that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days.
Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.”
Revelation 2:10-11

1. The work of the devil.

a) The Lord Jesus Himself identified the source of their tribulation.

b) The Devil was the one behind all the pogroms being carried out against the believers.

2. God’s protection.

a) This must be remembered.

b) The Devil would cause some to be thrown in jail.

c) The believers would be tested severely.

d) But they need not yield to fear.

3. Tribulation for ten days.

a) The meaning is that the believers would not have to suffer for a prolonged period of time.

b) Ten days of suffering for their faith is not so formidable.

c) The believer must find the courage and strength to endure suffering.

4. A great challenge.

a) The believers at the Church must determine to be faithful to the death.

b) The faithful who are resistant to the end would be given a crown of life.

5. An appeal to listen to what the Holy Spirit was saying.

a) His message was not only for the Church at Smyrna.

b) His word was applicable to all churches.

c) All true believers must seek to be “overcomers”.

d) Those who overcome will not be affected by the second death.

i) The first death.

It is a reference to the fact that we will all die once day.

ii) The second death.

This is a reference to how God would judge those who have rejected His offer of
salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

iii) The Saviour came that we may be spared judgment and condemnation
from God.

iv) In the Lord Jesus we will find both salvation and victory over all the evils of life.
