"To the angel of the church at Ephesus"

Text: Revelation 2:1

A SERIES OF NOTIFICATIONS

The Lord Jesus, the First and the Last, sent a notification to all the Seven Churches of Asia Minor. These were not mere letters. They served as notices to the Seven Golden Lampstands concerning their spiritual status and their ministry as a Church.

“To the angel of the church of Ephesus write,
‘These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand,
who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands.'”
Revelation 2:1

1. The city of Ephesus.

a) Ephesus was part of the Ionia League of 12 nations.

b) It is found in modern day Turkey.

c) It was conquered by Rome in the 2nd century BC.

d) It was a major centre:

i) Commerce (Trade and Bank)

ii) Culture (Different culture could be found here)

e) The famous Temple of Artemis (Diana) was found here.

i) The Temple had 127 pillars.

ii) Each pillar was 60 feet high (12.28m).

iii) It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

2. Famous preachers who ministered at Ephesus.

a) Paul ministered there for 3 years (Acts 20:31).

b) Aquila, Priscilla and Apollos were at Ephesus too (Acts 18:24-28).

c) Timothy was sent there by the Apostle Paul (1 Timothy 1:3).

3. To whom was this Notification given.

a) To the angel of the Church.

i) He was God’s appointed messenger.

ii) He was held responsible.

b) To the church congregation.

i) The leaders.

ii) The church members.

4. The Author of this Notification (Letter).

a) The Lord Jesus Himself.

b) He holds the seven stars in His right hand.

c) He walks amidst the seven lampstands.
