"The water came up to my ankles"

Text: Ezekiel 47:3

MEASURING THE DEPTH OF WATER

The water that flowed from the Temple may be described as a trickle. The angelic guide wanted Ezekiel to actually experience the depth of this amazing river that flowed from the Temple.

“And when the man went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through the waters;
the water came up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through; the water came up to my waist. Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed. He said to me, ‘Son of man, have you seen this?’ Then he brought me and returned me to the bank of the river.”
Ezekiel 47:3-6

1. Half a kilometre away (1000 cubits).

a) The depth of the rivulet was just ankle deep.

b) Ezekiel stepped into the water.

2. The second half kilometre.

b) The river was now a little deeper.

3. The third half kilometre.

a) The depth was now waist deep.

b) The river had grown deeper.

4. The fourth half kilometre.

a) Ezekiel could not wade through the river.

b) He would need to swim if he wanted to cross the deep river.

5. The angel then asked Ezekiel a question.

a) “Son of man, have you seen this?”

b) Had Ezekiel understood this vision?

c) The angel guide then brought Ezekiel back to the bank of the river.

6. The symbol of water.

a) It is a symbol of life.

i) It may be described as a fountain of life (John 4:14).

ii) It may also be described as a river (John 7:38).

b) The symbol of a River in Ezekiel.

i) It may start off as a trickle.

ii) It grows to an ankle-deep rivulet.

iii) It becomes knee deep as one progresses further.

iv) Then it becomes deeper yet, it is waist-deep.

v) Finally, one has to swim in this mighty River of life.

vi) This well describes the spiritual life we can find in the Lord!
