Text: Luke 20:23-26

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE LORD JESUS AND THE SPIES OF THE CHIEF PRIESTS

1. The spies who tried to trap the Lord Jesus.

a. They thought they were smart.
b. They were smug when they put the question of paying taxes to Caesar.

2. The response of the Lord Jesus was beyond their understanding.

a. It showed His wisdom.
b. It also displayed His righteousness.

THE ANSWER OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

“But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, ‘Why do you test Me? Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?’ They answered and said, ‘Caesar’s.’ And He said to them, ‘Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’”

Luke 20:23-25

1. The perception of the Lord Jesus.

a. He had noted their craftiness.
b. He knew that they had raised the question of paying taxes to test Him.

2. Asking for a denarius.

a. This was a Roman coin.
b. A denarius was the pay of a general worker for the day.

3. On the Denarius

a. The face of Caesar was imprinted.
b. It was the official Roman currency.

4. The profound wisdom of the Lord Jesus displayed.

a. “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s”
i. Were the opponents rendering to Caesar what was his right?
ii. Were they paying their taxes?
iii. Were they respecting Roman laws or breaking them?
b. “And to God the things that are God’s”
i. Were the opponents rendering to God what was due to Him?
ii. Were they walking in righteousness?
iii. Were they keeping His commandments?

5. The silence of the opponents.

“But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marvelled at His answer and kept silent.”

Luke 20:26

a. They were astonished.
b. They could not debate the Lord Jesus on either statement He made.
c. They could not catch Him at His words in the presence of all who were there.
d. They would be caught out if they had attempted to engage the Lord Jesus further.

“他们当着百姓,在这话上得不着把柄,又稀奇他的应对,就闭口无言了。”

《路加福音 20:26》

a. 他们很稀奇

b. 他们无法与主耶稣辩论任何一个陈述

c. 在所有在场的人面前,他们在祂话上得不着把柄

d. 如果他们试图进一步与主耶稣互动,他们就会被抓
