The Great Spiritual Battle Between Our Lord Jesus And Satan

From time immemorial, a great spiritual battle was waged. It was a war between light and darkness. It was the inevitable clash between the Lord Jesus and Satan. Before Christ’s death, the evil one possessed tremendous powers over human beings.

“Him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”
Hebrews 2:14-15

It was through the fear of death that Satan held mankind in bondage. It was through the power of sin that he worked in the hearts of man. The Lord Jesus came and sought to destroy his powers. It was in this great battle that light prevailed over darkness.

The Lord’s Great Victory Over The Work Of The Devil

“Inasmuch then as the children having partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”
Hebrews 2:14-15

In order to defeat Satan, the Lord Jesus came to earth to be like one of us. Even though He was tempted by the evil one, He resoundingly overcame His wiles. When the Lord Jesus died on the cross, He became the captain of our salvation (Hebrews 2:10). He destroyed the power of the devil. Our Saviour has given us the victory over the power of death and sin. There is no need to fear the sting of death any longer. The Lord Jesus has released us from Satan’s power.

Focusing Our Eyes On The Lord Jesus

“But we see Jesus”
Hebrews 2:9

As we see the victory that we have in Jesus, it should cause us to focus on Him even more.

1. Appreciating And Loving Our Precious Saviour So Much More

It was the work that the Lord Jesus had done on the cross that brought about victory over death and sin. Our salvation should cause us to appreciate and love the Lord in a deeper way. We should never take our faith in the Lord for granted.

2. Identifying With Our Lord Jesus

“He Himself likewise shared in the same…”
Hebrews 2:14

There should come a greater sense of identification with the Lord Jesus. He came to be like one of us. He understands all our weaknesses. We should seek to identify with the Lord because He knows us well.

3. Learning To Relate More To Christ

“For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.”
Hebrews 2:18

Because the Lord Jesus had suffered and was tempted like one of us, He is able to effectively aid us in our times of needs. We thank God that the Lord Jesus has the victory over Satan. Our challenge is to relate to Him even more.
