Protecting Ourselves From Doubts About Our Salvation

It is easy for young Christians to doubt their salvation and the devil knows it. One of the pervasive tactics of Satan is to cause them to question whether they are really saved. In some churches today, people are taught that there is no assurance of salvation. If they fall away from the Lord, they can easily lose their salvation. People can end up having to struggle constantly whether they belong to God or not. The evil one will always seek to create dark doubts about our faith in Christ. We can protect ourselves from such doubts by putting on the helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:17). The Roman soldier will obviously wear a helmet to protect his head from the blows of his enemy. In a similar way, the Christian soldier wears the helmet of salvation to protect his mind concerning doubts of his salvation.

A Deeper Appreciation Of Our Salvation

Our challenge is to have a deeper appreciation of what our salvation is. There should be a growing appreciation of our eternal life in Christ. Let’s examine two aspects.

1. Sealed By The Spirit Of God

“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance…”
Ephesians 1:13-14

When a person recognises the Lord Jesus as Saviour and exercises true faith in Him, there will come salvation. The Holy Spirit will come upon that person and seal him for all eternity. A seal was used during the days of Paul to secure and authenticate a letter as belonging to the writer. The Holy Spirit is our seal that we truly belong to God forever. He is the guarantee that we will receive the inheritance of eternal life in Christ. When we understand what it means to be sealed with the Holy Spirit, there comes a great sense of assurance.

2. Sonship By Jesus Christ

“Having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself…”
Ephesians 1:5

God has also given us the wonderful privilege of being adopted as His sons. Through faith in the Lord Jesus, God the Father will receive us as His children. Once we become children of God, we will forever be His children. We can never lose our sonship.

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…”
Romans 8:16-17

The Spirit will bear witness to us that we are indeed children of God. Furthermore, we will also see how we are heirs of God. What a wonderful thought! Brethren, let’s seek to understand more about the doctrine of salvation. We can be fully assured that we are saved and no one can take that away. Let’s learn to put on the helmet of God by appreciating our salvation at a deeper level.
