The challenge to trust

As we begin 2022, let us be challenged to place our trust in the Lord. In learning to trust, I have been dwelling upon Psalm 37:3,4, “Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Pastor Charles taught us at the first Sunday Morning Worship of the year how we can overcome the problem of fretting. King David gave the challenge not to fret three times. The way to overcome fretting is to trust in the Lord.

One thing that I have realised is that we often assume that we are trusting the Lord. Our problem of fretting over many matters tells us otherwise. Let us check our faith concerning how we are trusting the Lord.

Commencement of trust

Let us consider whether we have these things as part of our trust in the Lord.

1. Do good

a. Trust is expressed in learning how to do good.
b. If we are not doing anything, then we are not trusting…we would be fretting.
c. Trust leads us to do healthy and happy acts of goodness.
d. Doing good causes us to be a blessing to others.

We thank God for the opportunity to reach out to our seniors through the Special Seniors Programme each week. We do good when we care for them and uplift their spirit and faith. Doing good should naturally flow from trusting the Lord. Let us be challenged to trust and do good to others.

2. Dwell in the land

a. Whenever we are faced with a difficult situation, we tend to escape, to run from it.
b. When faced with a famine, Abraham and his family fled to Egypt even though God had told him to dwell in Canaan. It was a misstep of Abraham (Genesis 12:10-20).
c. Trust in the Lord causes us not to panic but to continue to dwell in the land.
d. We should stay and continue with what we are meant to do.

Let us be challenged to trust and to dwell in the land.

3. Feed on His faithfulness

a. Feeding on the faithfulness of God helps us to build our trust in the Lord.
b. God is truly faithful no matter what difficulties we are faced with.
c. I recall what the Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “If we are faithless, He remains faithful.” (2 Timothy 2:13) No matter what sins or problems we struggle with, God is always faithful. Let us be challenged to feed on His faithfulness that we may trust the Lord more.

4. Delight in the Lord

When we trust the Lord, our delight would be in Him for all that He is. I have discovered that there comes a special sense of joy in trusting the Lord through the challenges of life.

5. Desires of the heart

When we trust the Lord, we desire the right things in our hearts. My choice would be to do good, dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness. Let us be challenged to ensure that we are trusting the Lord the way we should.
