INTRODUCTION

1. The Judgment of God is a difficult truth to understand and accept

2. Some people turn away from believing in God because of His Judgment

3. God’s Judgment may be comprehended if we study the Scriptures carefully

A QUICK REVIEW

1. A great outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah Genesis 18:20a

2. Their sin was very grave Genesis 18:20b

3. Abraham had pleaded with God to spare the cities
if there were 10 righteous men there Genesis 18:32

4. What is our understanding of God?

a) Gracious
b) Merciful
c) Just

THE TWO ANGELS IN THE CITY OF SODOM

1. They were threatened with gang rape Genesis 19:5

2. When Lot tried to intervene
he was threatened as well Genesis 19:9

3. The Angels had to strike them with blindness Genesis 19:11

LOOKING FOR THE 10 RIGHTEOUS MEN

1. Question
“Have you anyone else here?” Genesis 19:12a

2. Suggestions

a) Son-in-law
b) Your sons
c) Your daughters
d) Whomever you have in the city Genesis 19:12b

3. What was the answer?

10 righteous men could not be found!

LOT’S WORD TO HIS SONS-IN-LAW

1. Lot went out to his sons-in-law Genesis 19:14a

2. His urgent words

a) “Get up, get out of this place” Genesis 19:14b
b) “For the LORD will destroy this city” Genesis 19:14c

3. The response of the sons-in-law

a) They rejected Lot’s word
b) “He seemed to be joking” Genesis 19:14d

THE ADMONITION OF THE ANGELS

1. The morning had dawned

2. The angels urged Lot to hurry

3. The Judgment of God would take place

“Arise, take your wife and your two daughters
who are here, lest you be consumed in
the punishment of the city” Genesis 19:15

4. Lot’s response

a) He lingered Genesis 19:16a
b) But he had urged his sons-in-law to leave Genesis 19:14

FIRM ACTION TAKEN

1. Two angels and 2 pairs of hands

2. They took hold of the hands of: Genesis 19:16b

a) Lot
b) His wife
c) Daughter #1
d) Daughter #2

3. The LORD was merciful Genesis 19:16c

4. The angels brought him out
and set him outside of the city Genesis 19:16d

5. Vital words

a) “Escape for your life” Genesis 19:17b
b) “Do not look behind you” Genesis 19:17c
c) “Nor stay anywhere in the plain” Genesis 19:17d
d) “Escape to the mountains,
lest you be destroyed” Genesis 19:17e

A PLEA FROM LOT

1. He does not want to go to the mountains Genesis 19:18-19

2. He pleads

a) Favour
b) Increased mercy Genesis 19:19

3. A near-by small city called Zoar

a) He wants to escape there
b) Zoar means “A little one” Genesis 19:20

FURTHER MERCY SHOWN

The angel’s response

1. “See, I have favoured you concerning this thing” Genesis 19:21a

2.“I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken” Genesis 19:21b

3. “Hurry escape there.
For I cannot do anything until you arrive there” Genesis 19:22

THE DESTRUCTION OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH

1. Fire and brimstone rained on Sodom and Gomorrah
from heaven Genesis 19:24

2. Destruction

a) The cities were overthrown Genesis 19:25a
b) All the inhabitants of the cities Genesis 19:25b
c) What grew on the ground Genesis 19:25c

3. Lot’s Wife

a) She looked back
b) She became a pillar of salt Genesis 19:26

ABRAHAM

1. He went to the place where he had spoken to the LORD Genesis 19:27

2. He looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah Genesis 19:28a

3. He saw smoke… like the smoke of a furnace Genesis 19:28b

4. God remembered Abraham

a) Abraham had asked for 10 righteous people
b) He had Lot and his family in mind
c) God had spared Lot Genesis 19:29

CONCLUSION

1. God’s Mercy was shown very clearly

a) To Lot
b) His request to go to Zoar

2. God’s Judgment

a) He had sent His angels to check things out
b) They carried out God’s justice and His judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah
