Message: “Those who are of the faith of Abraham” Romans 4:16

INTRODUCTION

1. The Faith of Abraham

a) It is held out as an Example
b) But it is not Exemplary in every aspect

2. Fault Lines of life

a) Fear
b) Cowardice
c) Complicity

EXEMPLARY STEPS OF FAITH

1. The Call of God Romans 1:2

a) This was heeded
b) It took Faith to believe
i) In an Invisible God
ii) In the leading of this God

2. The Challenge given

a) To leave his country Genesis 12:1a
b) To leave his family Genesis 12:1b
c) To an unknown land Genesis 12:1c

3. The Compliance of Abraham

a) He departed
b) As the LORD had spoken to him Genesis 12:4
c) He came to the land of Canaan Genesis 12:5-6

4. The Confirmation from God

a) The LORD appeared to Abram Genesis 12:7a
b) The word of the LORD
“To your descendants I will give this land” Genesis 12:7b

5. Calling upon God I

a) Abram built an altar Genesis 12:7c
b) Because God had appeared to him Genesis 12:7d
c) This is a Worshipful response

6. Calling upon God II

a) He moved from there to the mountain
east of Bethel Genesis 12:8a
b) There he pitched his tent
with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east Genesis 12:8b
c) There he built an altar
and called on the name of the LORD Genesis 12:8c
d) So Abram journeyed
going on still toward the South Genesis 12:9

NON-EXEMPLARY STEPS I
(These were not Steps of Faith)

1. Famine in the land Genesis 12:10a

2. And Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there Genesis 12:10b

3. For the famine was severe in the land Genesis 12:10c

THE NON-STEPS OF FAITH

1. No Calling upon God

a) To ask for understanding
b) To ask for help

2. Reliance on human wisdom

a) There was severe famine in the land
b) Egypt was not affected by the famine

3. Move to dwell in Egypt

a) God’s word to Abram was forgotten
b) He was to dwell in Canaan
c) He must continue to exercise faith
d) He faltered at this juncture

NON-EXEMPLARY STEPS II

1. A Plan hatched near to Egypt Genesis 12:11

a) Abram
b) Sarai
They were to pose as brother and sister Genesis 12:13

2. A Plan

a) Disguise
b) Deception

3. In the land of Egypt

a) The Pharaoh had absolute power
b) Sarai was seized and brought to Pharaoh Genesis 12:15
c) Abram was treated well
for the sake of Sarai Genesis 12:16

GOD’S MIGHTY HAND SEEN

1. The LORD plagued Pharaoh Genesis 12:17

a) Great plagues
b) The punishment of God
c) For capturing Sarai
The Pharaoh enquired and recognised that these were Divine plagues.

2. The Pharaoh’s word to Abram

a) “What is this you have done to me?” Genesis 12:18a
b) “Why did you not tell me that
she was your wife?” Genesis 12:18b

3. Dismissal of Abram from Egypt

a) “Now therefore, here is your wife;
take her and go your way” Genesis 12:19
b) So Pharaoh commanded his men
concerning him; and they sent him away,
with his wife and all that he had” Genesis 12:20

THOSE OF THE FAITH OF ABRAHAM

1. Through the righteousness of faith Romans 4:13

2. It is of faith that it might be of grace Romans 4:16a

3. That the promise might be sure to all the seed (Jews) Romans 4:16b

4. Also to those who are of the faith of Abraham (Gentiles) Romans 4:16c

CONCLUSION

1. Our Faith is always tied to God’s Grace

2. Because of our Weaknesses

a) We may lie
b) We may hatch wicked plans
c) We may do wrong things

3. But our Faith in God remains

a) Valid
b) God’s grace will abound
c) He will protect us still

4. But we must learn the right lessons God wants us to learn
