Text: Isaiah 12, 25
(Commencement)
Title: “Behold, this is our God” Isaiah 25:9
THE MANY TITLES OF GOD IN THE BOOK OF ISAIAH
1. The LORD (Isaiah 1:2, 4, 10, 18; 2:3; 3:8, 13)
“The LORD has spoken” (Isaiah 1:2b)
“The mouth of the LORD has spoken” (Isaiah 1:20c)
“The terror of the LORD and the glory of His majesty” (Isaiah 2:10, 19, 21)
“The LORD says” (Isaiah 3:16)
2. The Holy One of Israel (Isaiah 1:4)
“They have forsaken the LORD,
They have provoked Him to anger, the Holy One of Israel” (Isaiah 1:4e)
But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment
And God who is holy shall be hallowed in righteousness” (Isaiah 5:16)
3. The LORD of hosts (Isaiah 1:8; 5:9)
“Unless the LORD of hosts had left to us a very small remnant,
We would have become like Sodom, we would have been made like Gomorrah” (Isaiah 1:8)
And one cried to another and said,
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts,
The whole earth is full of His glory” (Isaiah 6:2)
4. The Mighty One of Israel (Isaiah 1:24)
“Therefore the LORD says,
The LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel” (Isaiah 1:24)
5. The God of Jacob (Isaiah 2:3)
“Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
To the house of the God of Jacob,
He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths
For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD out of Jerusalem” (Isaiah 2:3)
6. Well-beloved (Isaiah 5:1)
“Now let me sing to my Well-beloved
A song to my Beloved regarding His vineyard:
My Well-beloved has a vineyard, on a very fruitful hill” (Isaiah 5:1)
7. The King, the LORD of hosts (Isaiah 6:5)
So I said:
“Woe is me, for I am undone!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.” (Isaiah 6:5)
THE REVELATION OF THE LORD GOD THROUGH HIS TITLES
1. Titles are reflective
a) Of the Person who is described
i) His person (His attributes)
ii) His power
iii) His glory
iv) His majesty
v) His presence
vi) His promises
b) Of the context in which the revelation is made
i) The rebuke of the Lord
ii) The anger of the Lord
iii) The judgment of the Lord
iv) The promise of hope for the remnant
2. They are also indicative
a) Of what God is thinking and feeling
b) Of what God intends to do
c) Of how God sees sinful and erring mankind
d) Of the promise of hope and redemption
THE LACK THAT IS IN MAN AS REPRESENTED BY ANCIENT ISRAEL
1. The lack of deep knowledge of God
a) Man tends to limit God
b) He tends to have a fixed understanding of God
c) He does not seek spiritual growth much
2. The lack of sensitivity to God
a) Ignorant of what God thinks and feels
b) Oblivious of the danger of being so far from God
c) Not bothered even if he is weak
d) Resentful when corrected
3. The consequences of a life that is obviously not close to the Lord
a) Worldliness
b) Corruption
c) In danger of being judged and chastised
THE DAWN OF NEW DISCOVERY OF THE GLORY AND MAJESTY OF GOD
Isaiah 6
1. A cry of Woe (despair)
“Woe is me, for I am undone! (Isaiah 6:5a)
2. A heartfelt confession
“Because I am a man of unclean lips. I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips” (Isaiah 6:5b)
3. A heart-warming response from the LORD God
a) Behold, this has touched your lips (Isaiah 6:7b)
b) Your iniquity is taken away (Isaiah 6:7c)
c) And your sin is purged (Isaiah 6:7d)
4.Invitation to discover a renewed relationship and faith in God
“Behold, God is my salvation” (Isaiah 12:2)
“O LORD, You are my God, I will exalt You” (Isaiah 25:1)
