"Looking for the blessed hope..."

Text: Titus 2:13

LOOKING AT THE FUTURE

We live in the present but we also live in hope of a better future. However, when we speak about the future, we often think in terms of a better future on earth. The apostle Paul gives us sound Biblical advice as to how we should employ our “Christian hope” with reference to the glorious future of Christ’s return.

“Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing
of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ.”
Titus 2:13

1. “Looking for”

a) This is not just mere anticipation.
b) This phrase carries with it a special sense of welcome.
c) There is certainly a great sense of expectation as well.

2. “The blessed hope”

a) The return of the Lord Jesus Christ is indeed called “a blessed hope”.
b) Every true believer ought to look forward to the Lord’s return.
c) His return is a certain hope.
d) It is important that we do not lose sight of this blessed hope that we have in Christ.

3. Human hope distinguished

a) When we speak of hope we often think of our future in this present world.
b) This is not wrong in itself but it is not the “blessed hope” Paul writes about.

4. “Glorious appearing”

a) When Jesus first appeared on earth only a handful of people recognised Him.
b) When He returns it will be a glorious appearing.
c) The fullness of His glory will be manifested.

5. “Our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ”

a) We must never lose sight of the greatness of our Saviour.
b) Paul extols the Lord Jesus for who He truly is.
i) He is our great God.
ii) He is our Saviour.
iii) He is indeed the Christ (The Anointed One of God).
c) Let us learn to exult in our faith and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ!
