Serious Objections
Text: John 6:30-31
SERIOUS OBJECTIONS
The multitudes were not prepared to accept the word of the Lord Jesus Christ. They raised serious objections.
“Therefore they said to Him,
‘What sign will You perform then,
that we may see it and believe You?
What work would You do?
Our fathers ate the manna in the desert;
as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’’”John 6:30-31
1. The multitudes challenged the statements of Jesus
a) They raised two questions.
i) What sign do You perform then that we may see it and believe You?
ii) What work do you do?
b) The sign of feeding the five thousand.
i) This was obviously not enough for the multitudes.
ii) A moment ago, they were so sure that Jesus would prove to be a worthy king.
iii) Now, they were challenging Him to perform more signs before they could believe Him.
c) The works of Jesus had obviously been discounted.
i) The healing of the lame
ii) The opening of blind eyes
iii) The restoring of hearing to the deaf
iv) The casting out of demons
v) The raising of the dead
d) The above should have been more than enough “proof” that Jesus was the Saviour and Lord.
2. The multitudes were enamoured of Moses
a) They were actually comparing Jesus with Moses.
b) They believed that Moses gave their forefathers bread from heaven.
c) They even cited the Scriptures to the Lord Jesus to prove the greatness of Moses.
d) The word “He” was a reference to Moses as far as the multitudes were concerned.
e) Suddenly they were not so impressed with this miracle of feeding the five thousand!
