Running To The Tomb
Text: John 20: 3 - 5
RUNNING TO THE TOMB
The news that Mary had brought caused the two Disciples , Peter and John to run to the garden tomb. They too wanted to know what had happened.
“Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in.”
John 20:3-5
1. “Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb”
a. Peter and John immediately set out.
b. Their destination was obvious.
c. They were going to the garden tomb of Jesus.
2. “So they both ran together”
a. They were as anxious as Mary was.
b. The faster they got there, the better.
c. They ran to the garden tomb.
3. “The other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first”
a. John was probably the younger man.
b. He outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
4. “And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there”
a. John however, did not go into the tomb.
b. He just looked in.
5. Some reasons why John did not go into the tomb
a. He was uncertain what he should do.
b. He waited for Peter to arrive.
c. He respected the dead and did not feel it proper to just barge into the tomb of Jesus.
6. “Saw the linen cloths lying there”
a. He did see the linen cloth lying there.
b. He could not fully understand what had happened.
c. He waited for Peter to reach the garden tomb.
