The Kingdom Of Truth
Text: John 18: 37
THE KINGDOM OF TRUTH
Pilate did not fully comprehend what Jesus meant when He spoke about His kingdom. He understood only the basic ideas.
“Pilate therefore said to Him, ‘Are You a king then?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.’”
John 18:37
1. Pilate’s query: “Are You a king then”
a. Pilate understood kingship the way a typical Roman governor would.
b. Rome had fought many kings before it became an empire.
c. Was Jesus one of those kings whom Rome must fight and conquer?
2. The response of Jesus
a. “You say rightly that I am a king”
i. The word “king” is not confined to a political or military ruler.
ii. The word “king” may be used by Jesus without making it a threat to Rome.
b. “For this cause I have come into the world”
i. Jesus had come into world to speak to people about the kingdom of God (Matthew 4:17).
ii. He had come to invite people to enter into God’s kingdom through faith in Him.
c. “That I should bear witness to the truth”
i. The truth Jesus spoke of was a reference to the Word of God.
ii. He had come to bear witness of God’s truth by His life.
iii. His teachings reflected the truth that God had given to Israel and the world.
iv. His deeds were good and righteous and they help bear witness too.
d. “Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice”
i. Those who hear Jesus would recognize the truth He proclaimed.
ii. They would repent of their sins.
iii. They would humbly seek to enter into His kingdom of truth.
iv. They would become followers of truth.
v. Jesus was “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
