1. It was to share his personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. He wanted his friend, the “most excellent Theophilus”, to have a clear and certain knowledge about the Lord Jesus.
3. There were many narratives (stories) that were already in circulation. Some of them may not have been very accurate. Thus, he wanted to write a very careful account of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ.
HOW LUKE WENT ABOUT WRITING HIS GOSPEL
1. Narratives about the life of the Lord Jesus
a. There were many.
b. He would have to do the following things:
i. To collect material.
ii. To check out the content.
iii. To collate all the material to form the Gospel.
2. The Content of his Gospel
a. They were things that were believed in by the followers of the Lord Jesus.
b. He wanted to write about the things that were fulfilled (Luke 1:2).
i. There were prophecies about the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus.
ii. Luke wanted to check out how these prophecies were fulfilled.
3. A “perfect understanding”
a. Luke made sure that he fully understood everything before writing.
b. The word “perfect” means:
i. Mature
ii. Complete
4. An orderly account
a. The Gospel of Luke would be presented in an orderly manner.
b. Luke’s hope was that Theophilus would, after reading, have certain knowledge about the Lord Jesus Christ.

1. A good and sound knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ
a. This is a good thing to have.
b. Let us look forward to achieving this.
2. Take time to do the following:
a. Read the Scripture Text.
b. Ponder what the passage is saying.
