"You have brought up my life from the pit"

Text: Jonah 2:6

ACUTE AWARENESS OF DIRE DANGER

Jonah was acutely aware of the danger he was in. He was facing certain death if God did not show mercy to him.

“The waters surrounded me, even to my soul;
The deep closed around me;
Weeds were wrapped around my head.
I went down to the moorings of the mountains;
The earth with its bars closed behind me forever;
Yet You have brought up my life from the pit,
O LORD, my God.”
Jonah 2:5-6

1. Expressions of growing awareness of imminent death

a) “The waters surrounded me, even to my soul”

Jonah may have felt that he was drowning!

b) “The deep closed around me”

He was in the belly of the great fish! If he had been claustrophobic, the situation at hand would have caused sheer panic!

c) “Weeds were wrapped around my head”

The great fish may have swallowed up more than Jonah. He could have swallowed up weeds that were now wrapped around his head (and possibly his neck)!

d) “I went down to the moorings of the mountains”
i) The great fish may have been a deep-sea creature.
ii) Jonah may have felt that the fish had gone deep into the sea. The moorings of the mountain were to be found in the deepest seas!
e) “The earth with its bars closed behind me forever”
i) Jonah might have felt that he had been imprisoned in a maximum security jail.
ii) The bars of this watery prison seemed to have closed tightly and he cannot get out.

2. “Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God”

a) Jonah believed that there was yet hope.
b) God would hear his voice.
c) God would answer his prayer somehow.
d) God was able to bring Jonah out of the pit he found himself in.

THE DELIVERANCE THAT GOD CAN GIVE

That God would deliver His people must never be doubted!

1. God could rescue a whole nation from disastrous ruination.

2. Assuredly, God can also deliver Jonah no matter how bleak the present circumstances may be!
