Day 98

"It shall not come into the house of the LORD"

Text: Hosea 9:4

OFFERINGS REJECTED BY THE LORD

The rejection of the LORD also included the offerings that people presented to Him as an act of worship.

“They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD,
Nor shall their sacrifices be pleasing to Him.
It shall be like bread of mourners to them;
All who eat it shall be defiled.
For their bread shall be for their own life;
It shall not come into the house of the LORD.
What will you do in the appointed day,
And in the day of the feast of the LORD?”
Hosea 9:4-5

1. “They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, nor shall their sacrifices be pleasing to Him”

a) The wine offering is called “libation”.
b) It is offered with other sacrifices rather than separately.
c) The sacrifice and drink offering will be rejected by the LORD because the nation was defiled by sin.
d) Being thus defiled, the offerings would be considered unclean and unacceptable.

2. “It shall be like bread of mourners to them; all who eat it shall be defiled”

a) Ceremonial uncleanness is in mind here.
b) Israel would understand at least this basic concept.
c) Idolatrous practices also regard the dead as defiled.
d) The bread of mourners would be considered “unclean” ceremonially.
e) Those who partake of the bread would be considered unclean.
f) This was how God would regard those who came to Him when they are defiled by sin unconfessed.
g) The congregation was considered defiled and unholy by the LORD.

3. “For their bread shall be for their own life”

a) The country had been badly ravaged by war.
b) Whatever bread they could find would be barely enough for sustenance of life.

4. “It shall not come into the house of the LORD”

a) Anything that is defiled cannot be presented to the LORD.
b) The nation of Israel had sinned grievously against God.

5. “What will you do in the appointed day, and in the day of the feast of the LORD?”

a) No defiled offering would be allowed into the house of the LORD.
b) The feast of the LORD cannot be celebrated by Israel because it remained in its sinful state!
