Day 19

"I will return and take away My grain"

Text: Hosea 2:9

THE LORD’S GRACIOUS PROVISION

It was sad that God had to speak so sternly to Israel in this manner. It seemed that there were no other ways for Israel to learn about the Lord’s gracious provision.

“Therefore I will return and take away
My grain in its time,
And My new wine in its season,
And will take back My wool and My linen,
Given to cover her nakedness.”
Hosea 2:9

1. Four provisions were mentioned specifically

a) Grain
b) Wine
c) Wool
d) Linen

2. Time and season

a) Farming industry
i) Growing of grain (wheat, barley, etc.).
ii) Man may sow.
iii) Israel had a strong agrarian focus.
iv) But God is the One who must bless with the rain.
v) If God does not bless then there would be no harvest.
b) Animal husbandry
i) The rearing of sheep was a major industry.
ii) Israel had shepherds from the time of Abraham.
iii) If God does not bless there would be no wool.
c) Linen
i) This is a reference to the trading industry.
ii) Israel was able to trade its grain, wine and wool to purchase fine linen.
iii) Its power to get wealth came from God (Deuteronomy 8:18).

3. “I will return and take away… and will take back”

a) Since God’s provision was not appreciated.
b) Then He reserves the right to take away and to take back what is rightfully His.
