"Spoken by the Lord..."

Text: Hebrews 2:3c

THE MINISTRY OF TEACHING

Jesus taught extensively. He went from village to village proclaiming the kingdom of God. The following text bears this up.

“And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching
in their synagogues, preaching the Gospel of
the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness
and all kinds of disease among the people.”

Matthew 4:23

THE PROBLEM OF NEGLECTING THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS

The teachings of Jesus did not go down well with some people. The author of Hebrews expressed deep concern about how some neglected the teachings of Jesus.

“How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation,
which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord?”

Hebrews 2:3

The following concerns may be highlighted thus:-

1. The problem of neglect (ameleo)

a) This is expressed in a lack of concern when listening to the word of God.
b) It is also further evidenced in carelessness (of hearing God’s word).

2. The promise of great salvation neglected

a) Jesus’ offer of salvation and entrance into His kingdom was rejected (Cf. John 1:10-11).
b) There remained the fearful consequences of such negligence.

THE PROBLEM OF NEGLECTING THE PERSON OF “THE LORD”

Two problems were highlighted by the author of Hebrews. The first problem was that of neglect of the great salvation offered in the Gospel. The second problem was just as important. It involved the neglect of the Lord (“Jesus Christ”) Himself.

1. How can one escape judgment when he has neglected the One who is greater than angels?

2. How can one escape judgment when he has neglected the One who is rightly called “Lord”?

3. The word “escape” (feugo) was correctly used!

The salvation the Lord proffered was escape from certain judgment of our sins committed. If we neglected this salvation offered, how then shall we escape condemnation?
