"If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons..."

Text: Hebrews 12:7

ENDURING CHASTENING

It is not easy to endure chastening. However, it is not impossible to learn how we may endure chastening. This is one important lesson that must be learned well.

“If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons;
For what son is there whom a father does not chasten?
But if you are without chastening, of which all have become
Partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.”
Hebrews 12:7-8

1. If you endure chastening, God deals with you as sons

a) This is a call to endure chastening.
b) There is no reason why we should reject chastening.
c) In our relationship with God as His children, chastening is to be accepted.

2. For what son is there whom a father does not chasten?

a) This argument is drawn from an understanding of human relationship between a father and his son.
b) Which son has never received chastening from an earthly father?

3. If you are without chastening

a) This is a reference to a rejection of chastening from God.
b) The person would rather reject God than to receive chastening.

4. Of which all have become partakers

a) All genuine sons have received and accepted chastening from God.
b) They recognize God’s prerogative to chasten every son of His.

5. Then you are illegitimate and not sons

a) Being called “illegitimate” is a frightening thought.
b) These are thus not “true sons” of God.
