"Offered according to the law..."

Text: Hebrews 10:8

JESUS’ UNDERSTANDING OF THE LAW

The author of Hebrews sought to convey the idea that Jesus knew the Mosaic law very well.

“Previously saying, ‘Sacrifice and offering,
burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire,
nor had pleasure in them’ (which are offered according
to the law). ”
Hebrews 10:8

1. Previously saying

a) This was a reference to the citation of the Scriptures.
b) This was also a preface to what would be cited next.

2. A list of offerings mentioned

a) Sacrifice and offering
b) Burnt offerings
c) Offerings for sin

These things were mentioned to show that Jesus had a good working knowledge of this law that Moses received from God.

3. You did not desire nor had pleasure in them

a) This was intimated [Samuel’s word to king Saul (Cf. 1 Samuel 15:22)].
b) This was expressly declared by Isaiah (Cf. Isaiah 1:11).
c) Mere physical offerings was not what God desired (Cf. Psalm 50:9-13)

4. Which are offered according to the law

a) The Mosaic law did make such requirements.
b) But the Mosaic Law also taught worshippers how they were to relate to God- in faith and in obedience.
c) All offerings that were not accompanied by righteousness would render them invalid and unacceptable in God’s sight.
