"He who sows to the Spirit..."

Text: Galatians 6:8

SOWING TO THE SPIRIT

We have read much about the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the true believer. We have a very challenging concept to ponder over in the following text. The context focuses on the believer’s role in “sowing to the Spirit”.

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked;
for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.
For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption,
but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.”
Galatians 6:7-8

1. “Do not be deceived”

a) Deception may come from an external source.
b) It may also come about through “self-deception”.

2. “God is not mocked”

a) We cannot fool God.
b) He cannot be mocked!

3. “For whatever a man sows, that he will also reap”

a) This is a universal principle.
b) This is the principle of sowing and reaping.
i) This is true agriculturally.
ii) This is true spiritually as well.

4. “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption”

a) Sowing to the flesh must be understood in the light of Galatians 5:19-21.
b) The person who focuses on the works of the flesh will bring ruin to himself.
c) He cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

5. “But he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life”

a) “Sows to the Spirit”
i) The true believer has the Spirit of God in him.
ii) He will be inclined to “sow to the Spirit”. He will seek to cultivate things spiritual (of the Spirit).
b) “Will of the Spirit reap everlasting life”
i) This is according to the universal principle laid down by the Lord God Himself.
ii) The everlasting life that God has given to the true believer is confirmed to be true!
