Day 5

"I will take of the Spirit that is upon you..."

Text: Numbers 11:17

NO MENTION OF THE FILLING OF THE SPIRIT

Moses was especially called by the LORD God to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt (Exodus 3). However, there was no mention of the filling of the Spirit of God when he was called. The filling of the Spirit of God was specifically described with reference to Bezalel (Exodus 35:30-33).

How may we understand this? There need not be a specific mention of the filling of the Spirit of God, but there must be plenty of evidence that he was wonderfully filled with the Spirit of God.

EVIDENCE OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD FILLING THE LIFE OF AN INDIVIDUAL

In the case of Moses, the evidence of being filled with the Spirit of God is obvious. The following may be highlighted: –

1. In the calling of God

a) If there is a calling from God the Spirit of God would be there.
b) His work is to:
i) Anoint
ii) Lead
iii) Empower
iv) Fill

2. These features were obvious in the life and ministry of Moses

a) He was the anointed leader.
b) He was empowered to perform signs and wonders.
c) He was given much-needed wisdom from God to speak to Pharaoh and to teach the children of Israel.

CLEAR MENTION CAME LATER

Clear mention of the filling of the Spirit of God was noted in a later text. There was a time when Moses felt overwhelmed by the work of leading the children of Israel. God gave a special word of encouragement to Moses at that point of time. In this word specific mention of the Holy Spirit was noted.

“So the LORD said to Moses:
‘Gather to Me seventy men of the elders of Israel,
whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them;
bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you.
Then I will come down and talk with you there.
I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them;
and they shall bear the burden of the people with you,
that you may not bear it yourself alone.'”
Numbers 11:16-17

1. “The Spirit that is upon you”

This is a clear and specific mention of the Holy Spirit upon Moses.

2. The anointing of the Spirit of God

This is usually given when God calls a person to ministry, whether this is mentioned or not! The anointing of the Spirit of God is of critical importance to ministry.
