"The Helper, the Holy Spirit..."

Text: John 14:26

THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Lord Jesus needed to carefully teach His disciples essential knowledge about the Person of the Holy Spirit and His ministry.

“These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name,
He will teach you all things,
and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
John 14:25-26

1. “These things I have spoken to you”

a) Many were the lessons taught.
b) They were too many to fully remember.
c) Some were too deep to be easily fathomed.

2. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit”

a) The Helper is of Divine essence.
b) He is equal to the Lord Jesus.
c) He may be called “the Helper” but He is the Holy Spirit!
d) The Father will send the Holy Spirit, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ!

3. Features of His ministry highlighted: –

a) “He will teach you all things”
i) The Spirit’s role is also to teach.
ii) The reason is obvious; the disciples had not fully learned what Jesus had taught.
iii) The Spirit of God will teach the disciples what they must learn about faith and ministry.
iv) There will also be new things that the Spirit of God would teach the disciples, but none of what He will teach would ever be in conflict with what Jesus had taught.
b) “And bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you”
i) The disciples failed to remember and to apply the many lessons taught.
ii) They had to be rebuked on some occasions for their lack of faith. Knowledge of God and faith in Him are closely related.
iii) One of the tasks of the Spirit of God was to cause the disciples to remember the lessons taught.
iv) The danger of forgetting was a problem that plagued ancient Israel. The nation had forgotten God and had turned to idolatry.
