Ephesians
"Peace to the brethren, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen. "
Text: Ephesians 6:23-24
FINAL GREETINGS
As Paul concluded his letter to the Ephesians, he singled out three words that had a very strong Pauline flavour. Each of these words is rich and full of profound theological significance. These words must be read in the light of the full treatment Paul gave to it. These three words are “peace”, “love”, and “grace”.
1. Peace
Three aspects may be highlighted. To have this blessing of peace, is no small thing!
a) It is to be seen as part of God’s rich blessings to His children (Cf. Ephesians 1:2-3)
b) Christ Jesus Himself is our Peace(Cf. Ephesians 2:14)
It is He who has made peace possible at all (Cf. Ephesians 2:15)
c) We have a “reconciling peace” between Jews and Gentiles (Cf. Ephesians 2:16-17)
2. Love
Five features may be highlighted. We have a wondrous gift of love indeed!
a) The greatness of God’s love must be borne in mind (Cf. Ephesians 2:4)
b) This matchless love is to be found in Christ (Cf. Ephesians 3:17-19)
c) All believers are to be grounded in this love of Christ (Cf. Ephesians 3:17)
d) This love is to be evidenced in the Body of Christ (Cf. Ephesians 4:2, 15-16)
e) The Christian walk is to be characterised by love (Cf. Ephesians 5:2)
LOVE WITH FAITH
We have an interesting additional note from the pen of the apostle Paul. He wished the Ephesians “love with faith”. How should we appreciate this phrase?
1. The Source of this Love
This wonderful love comes from none other than the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
2. This wondrous love must not be doubted to be received in good faith!
This glorious gift of love is for real! Let us treasure this gift dearly.
