"And yet the soul is not satisfied"

Text: Ecclesiastes 6:7

WHAT IS THE MAKEUP OF MAN?

What is man? It is obvious that there is a physical component. But is man to be understood as having only a body?

“All the labour of man is for his mouth,
And yet the soul is not satisfied.”

Ecclesiastes 6:7

1. “All the labour of man is for his mouth”

If man is only physical:

a) He would have to feed the body.

b) He would have to labour to feed himself.

c) Much labour is put in to earn enough to feed his mouth.

d) But would the feeding of the physical being be sufficient?

e) If so, then the well-fed person would also be the most satisfied person.

2. “And yet the soul is not satisfied”

a) The feeling of dissatisfaction is felt.

i) Is the problem due to the lack of quantity?

ii) Is the problem due to the lack of quality?

iii) The problem would be resolved quite easily.

b) Wherein is this sense of dissatisfaction felt?

i) It is obviously a deeper problem.

ii) Solomon suggested that the deeper location is the soul.

iii) The inner being of Man is his soul.

iv) The satisfaction of the soul is not found in food at all.

v) The needs of the soul must be given due consideration.

vi) It is an essential part of Man.

c) But how the soul may be satisfied is not discussed here.

d) Solomon showed awareness of the existence of the soul and its need to find satisfaction.
