Day 14

"I made my works great"

Text: Ecclesiastes 2:4

WORKS OF GRANDEUR

Solomon went on to indulge in works of grandeur. Perhaps that might help him discover the purpose of life.

“I made my works great, I built myself houses,
and planted myself vineyards.
I made myself gardens and orchards,
and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.
I made myself water pools from which to water the growing trees of the grove.”
Ecclesiastes 2:4-6

1. Outstanding works

a) Great works
b) Houses

The first two would include the building of palatial houses for his many wives!

2. Beyond houses

a) Vineyards
i) This was not uncommon.
ii) Many had vineyards.
b) Orchards
i) Different kinds of fruit trees were planted.
ii) This was quite a venture considering the reign of King Solomon (970-931 BC).

3. Gardens

a) These were built more for beauty and pleasure.
b) To have beautiful gardens made would require much thought and planning.

4. Water pools

a) This would ensure that the groves he made would be well-watered.
b) Solomon was outstanding in planning this venture.

But was this the whole purpose of life? Only a small handful of people would be able to indulge in these works of grandeur. These may have given him much personal pleasure, but for the ordinary man in the street, these works would be completely out of reach!
