"Devoted themselves to the ministry of the saints-"

Text: 1 Corinthians 16:15

STRONG COMMENDATION

Paul’s conclusion of his letters often focused on strong commendation of people whom he knew personally. This was certainly the case in this first letter to the Corinthian Church.

1. This was good and right.

2. This was a wholesome practice.

3. The commendation of worthy people would be able to uplift many hearts.

“I urge you, brethren-
you know the household of Stephanas,
that it is the firstfruits of Achaia,
and that they have devoted themselves
to the ministry of the saints-
that you also submit to such,
and to everyone who works and labours with us.”
1 Corinthians 16:15-16

THE HOUSEHOLD OF STEPHANAS

Stephanas was known to the Corinthians. He was one of the first families to come to faith in Christ.

1. Firstfruits of Achaia

a) This would be a reference to the fact that they had become Christians.
b) In time they bore fruit in their life.
c) Their area of ministry:
i) They sought to minister to the saints.
ii) They served the Lord humbly caring for people.
iii) What stood out was that they “devoted” themselves to this ministry.

2. “That you also submit to such”

a) Paul was asking that this dear household be respected.
b) They should not be opposed or resisted.

3. “And to everyone who works and labours with us”

a) Stephanas and his household obviously laboured with Paul.
b) There were others (but not mentioned).
c) Each one has his own area of ministry.
d) Each one ought to be given due respect.
e) Obviously, this was not easily forthcoming.
f) Thus, Paul had to urge the Corinthian church to do the right thing.
g) The word “submission” in this context includes the elements of respect and support.
