The Response of the Children of Israel

Text: Deuteronomy 5:23-33

THE RESPONSE OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL

1. At Mount Sinai

a) Hearing the voice of God   (Deuteronomy 5:23)
b) In the midst of darkness   (Deuteronomy 5:23)
c) The mountain was burning with fire   (Deuteronomy 5:23)

2. The leaders of the people representing the congregation

a) The heads of the tribes   (Deuteronomy 5:23)
b) The elders (Deuteronomy 5:23)

3. The word given to Moses

a) Surely the LORD our God has shown us   (Deuteronomy 5:24)
i) His glory
ii) His greatness
iii) We have heard His voice from the midst of the fire
iv) We have seen this day that God speaks with man
v) Yet he still lives
b) Now therefore why should we die?   (Deuteronomy 5:25-26)
i) For this great fire will consume us
ii) If we hear the voice of the LORD our God anymore.
Then we shall die.
iii) For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of
the living God speaking from the midst of the fire,
as we have and lived?
c) You go near and hear   (Deuteronomy 5:27)
i) All that the LORD our God may say,
ii) And tell us all that the LORD our God says to you
iii) And we will hear
iv) And do it

THE WORD OF THE LORD IN REPLY

1. The LORD heard the voice of your words
when you spoke to me   (Deuteronomy 5:28)

a) I have heard the voice of the words of this people
Which they have spoken to you
b) They are right in all that they have spoken
c) Oh, that they had such a heart in them   (Deuteronomy 5:29)
i) That they would fear Me
ii) And always keep My commandments
iii) That it might be well with them
iv) And with their children forever

2. A word to the children of Israel
Go and say to them   (Deuteronomy 3:30)

a) Return to your tents
b) The request of the children of Israel had been granted

3. A word to Moses   (Deuteronomy 5:31)

a) But as for you
b) Stand here by Me
c) And I will speak to you
i) All the commandments
ii) The statutes
iii) The judgments
d) Which you shall teach them
i) That they may observe them
ii) In the land which I am giving them to possess

SUMMARY

1. Therefore you shall be careful to do

a) As the LORD your God has commanded you
b) You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left

2. You shall walk in all the ways

a) Which the LORD your God has commanded you
b) That you may live
c) And that it may be well with you
d) And that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess
