Scripture Text: Genesis 27:14-29

Message: “That my soul may bless you before I die” II

INTRODUCTION

1. A Tragic Story of errors and sins

a) The Errors
i) Parents
ii) Siblings
b) The Sins
i) Disdain (Esau)
ii) Deceit (Jacob)

2. Where there is no repentance

a) Sin has terrible ramifications
b) The consequences of sin can wreck a family for years on end

THE HUGE PLAN OF DECEIT

1. On the part of Rebekah

a) She was the mastermind
b) Rashly she said that she would bear the curse
if Isaac found them out Genesis 27:12-13
c) Commanding Jacob to do his part
The killing of 2 choice kids of goats Genesis 27:9, 13

2. On the part of Jacob

a) He complied
Knowing the risk involved Genesis 27:14
b) Recklessly and unwisely
He sought the first-born blessing
“That my soul may bless you before I die” Genesis 27:4

THE CARRYING OUT OF THE DECEITFUL PLAN

1. The food prepared

a) The savoury food
b) The bread Genesis 27:17

2. The clothes of Esau

a) Choice clothes of Esau Genesis 27:15
b) Skin of the goats
i) On the hands
ii) On the neck of Jacob Genesis 27:16

3. Jacob appearing before Isaac

a) He greets Isaac
“My father” Genesis 27:18a
b) Isaac’s response
“Here I am. Who are you, my son?” Genesis 27:18b

4. The Lie that Jacob told

Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn;
I have done just as you told me;
please arise, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.”
Genesis 27:19

a) Pretending to be Esau
b) Seeking Isaac’s blessing

ISAAC’S SUSPICION

But Isaac said to his son,
“How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?”
And he said, “Because the Lord your God brought it to me.”
Genesis 27:20

1. The swift return of “Esau” with the food

2. A Second Lie
This time, using God’s name

“Because the Lord your God brought it to me.”

ISAAC CONTINUES TO BE SUSPICIOUS

21 Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him.
24 Then he said, “Are you really my son Esau?”
He said, “I am.”

Genesis 27:21-24

1. Isaac is not convinced
He wants to feel Jacob

2. Jacob drew near to his father

3. Isaac asked again

“Are you really my son Esau?”  Genesis 27:24a

4. Jacob lies yet again
(The third time)

He said, “I am.”  Genesis 27:24b

5. Isaac is half-convinced

“The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”

a) Jacob could not disguise his voice
b) Isaac recognized Jacob’s voice

THE FIRST-BORN BLESSING

1. Isaac ate the meal that was brought to him

2. He asked Jacob to draw near and to give him a kiss

3. The blessing pronounced

And he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said:
27 “Surely, the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field
Which the Lord has blessed.

28 Therefore may God give you
Of the dew of heaven,
Of the fatness of the earth,
And plenty of grain and wine.

29 Let peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you.
Be master over your brethren,
And let your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Cursed be everyone who curses you,
And blessed be those who bless you!”

Genesis 27:27-29

4. May God give you

a) The dew of heaven
b) The fatness of the earth
c) Plenty if grain and wine

5. The Future

a) Let the peoples serve you
b) Nations bow down to you
c) Be master over your brethren
d) Let your mother’s sons bow down to you
e) Cursing and blessing
i) Those who curse will be cursed
ii) Those who bless will be blessed

CONCLUSION

1. The First-born Blessing had been given

a) As desired
b) As devised cunningly

2. But it had been obtained:

b) By deception
b) By lies

3. Of what meaning or worth are these words of blessing?
