Scripture Text: Genesis 27:1-13

Message: “That my soul may bless you before I die” I

INTRODUCTION

1. The Passing of the Years

a) The Lord had obviously blessed Isaac Genesis 26:13
b) Isaac had raised an altar to worship God Genesis 26:25

2. Old Age and its Challenges

a) Isaac was old Genesis 27:1a
b) His eyes were so dim
that he could not see Genesis 27:1b

A DEEPLY MOVING SCENE

1. Calling Esau but leaving out Jacob

He called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son.”
And he answered him, “Here I am.” Genesis 27:1c

a) Deep affection for Esau was obvious
b) There is nothing wrong about a deep affection

2. Conversation with Esau

a) Talking about Death
“Behold now, I am old. I do not know the day of my death.”
Genesis 27:2
i) Old age was mentioned
ii) The day of death was mentioned
b) Request of Esau I
“Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me.” Genesis 27:3
i) Love for “game”
ii) Animal freshly killed
c) Request of Esau II
“And make me savoury food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.” Genesis 27:4
i) Love for “savoury food”
ii) Blessing Esau before he dies

WHEN MISTAKES BECOME SINS

1. Mistakes may be made at any time

a) Younger age
b) Old Age
c) By anyone
i) Isaac
ii) Rebekah
iii) Esau
iv) Jacob

2. Mistakes are potentially dangerous

a) When mistakes are not recognized
b) When they are not corrected
c) Mistakes can become sins
d) Sin has deadly consequences

3. What were some of the obvious problems?

a) God was not mentioned at all
i) God had blessed Isaac Genesis 25:11
ii) God was with Isaac Genesis 26:28
b) Rebekah was not consulted
i) Isaac loved her Genesis 24:67
ii) What happened to that love?
c) Jacob was not considered
i) Jacob was the twin brother
ii) He did not feature in Isaac’s determination
d) Isaac’s life in the past
i) He used to meditate Genesis 24:63
ii) He pleaded with God Genesis 25:21
iii) He built an altar Genesis 26:25
e) Isaac’s life in the present
i) He loved food
ii) He loved Esau
(Almost exclusively)

REBEKAH’S RESPONSE

1. She had listened to what Isaac had planned to do Genesis 27:5

2. She came up with a scheme

3. She spoke to Jacob concerning her plan

8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you. 9 Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make savory food from them for your father, such as he loves. 10 Then you shall take it to your father, that he may eat it, and that he may bless you before his death.”

Genesis 27:8-10

a) Two choice kid-goats to be chosen
b) She would make the savoury food which Isaac loved
c) This food was to be brought to the father
d) And after eating, he would give his blessing
e) She demanded that Jacob obeyed her Genesis 27:8

THE FEAR OF JACOB

1. His fear was raised in a series of observations

11 “Look, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth-skinned man. 12 Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring a curse on myself and not a blessing.”
Genesis 27:11-12

a) He is smooth-skinned
b) He may appear to be a deceiver
c) He would end up with a curse and not a blessing

2. Addressing this fear

But his mother said to him,
“Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me.” Genesis 27:13

a) Rebekah dismissed his fear
b) She would bear the curse if Isaac berates Jacob as a deceiver
c) She insists that Jacob obeyed her

CONCLUSION

1. Mistakes must be addressed candidly

2. They must be corrected before they become sins

3. Sins cannot be taken lightly at any time
