THE DISCIPLE PETER
Luke 5

1. Peter had been introduced to the Lord Jesus               John 1:41-42

2. He had been formally called to follow Jesus                Mark 1:16-18

A LIFE-CHANGING EVENT

1. Jesus was speaking to the multitudes                            Luke 5:1-3

2. He got into a boat and from there He preached          Luke 5:3

3. After preaching Jesus addressed Peter
Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch         Luke 5:4

4. Peter’s response
Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.       Luke 5:5

a) Peter called Jesus “Master” (Greek: Epistata)

b) This was a respectful term of address

5. A miracle occurred

a) They caught a great number of fish

b) Their net was breaking

c) They called their partners to help them

d) Both boats were filled with fishes

e) Their boats began to sink              Luke 5:6-7

6. Peter’s enlightenment

a) He no longer called Jesus “Master”

b) He now called Him “Lord” (Greek: kurios)         Luke 5:8

c) Suddenly he was conscious of his personal sinfulness           Luke 5:8

d) He asked Jesus to depart for he felt unworthy          Luke 5:8

7. Jesus’s word to Peter

a) Do not be afraid

b) From now on you will catch men Luke 5:10
